Working out during the holidays is not easy

Working out during the holidays is not easy. We find ourselves much less active and also consuming food full of sugar and often highly processed. Not to mention most of you are really trying to make family time a priority and make up for, often lost time, throughout the busy times of the year. I’m here to tell you that you have plenty of time to workout!

My advice is simple, get up early and get moving. I know that you are going to want to sleep in, but don’t. You see on vacation or holiday time this is the time slot most available to you. If you wake up early and get your workout in you don’t have to worry about excuses creeping in and also the distraction of what everyone else has planned for the day! Plus, you don’t have to be the jerk leaving in the middle of the day to go outside, to the garage or to the gym when everyone else wants to see you and spend time with you. That is hard choice number 1 and to me its something that is a must!

My next piece of advice is for you to keep the workouts short and concise but of course intense. Stick to movements that have a large range of motion and don’t feel like you need weights, because you don’t! Use moves like explosive lower body ploy’s. An example would be squat jumps, tuck jumps, lunge jumps, these all take a great amount of effort and energy, which breeds the good stuff…results. Then couple or pair them with an upper body movement like a push up or a burpee or even a core movement like sit up or mountain climber, bridge…you get the idea. It is important when you try to pick your movements that you give yourself a chance to KEEP MOVING. The best bet here is to pick a movement for you legs, a movement for your upper body, and a movement for your core and keep going through them for anywhere from 5-15 minutes. This can be plenty if you pick the right moves and in the right rep range, enough to even make you sore.

Be creative, maybe put ideas in your phone or on paper before heading outside or to the gym so you don’t really have to think when you get there and you can just get rolling!

The goal with exercise on vacation or holiday’s is to pull in family that may not normally exercise. Maintain what fitness you have developed through your hard work. Keep the body fresh and ready to attack when you get back to your normal routine and also to help you handle the stress that family and the holiday’s can sometimes bring our way!
